ODU football team making friends with a ball named Wilson

From their first practice four years ago, Old Dominion's football team has used Nike footballs, the Nike 3005 Collegiate to be exact.
But when the Monarchs take on the Norfolk State Spartans in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs on Saturday, the Monarchs will be flinging and kicking and catching Wilson GST F1003s.
It's not by choice; the NCAA mandates the use of Wilson footballs - right there, on Page 9 of the NCAA Championship Manual.
So two months ago, ODU equipment manager Tommy Rapier put in an order for Wilson F1003s.
"The F1003s are the balls most similar to the Nikes we use," Rapier said. "We had to order them early because we wanted the ODU emblem on the ball and that takes about four weeks to special order."
