Messler's effort honored

DOVER — Liberty Mutual Insurance and Positive Coaching Alliance announced its "Top 10 Responsible Sports Moments" for 2011. One of the honorees was from Oyster River High School.

Kate Messler, an Oyster River senior and player/manager for the varsity girls basketball team, cheered for her team each game but never got a chance to play. Until this past year when, for the first time, Kate, a special needs student with a developmental disorder, was called into a game to start the second half against Sanborn on Feb. 17. She sank two 3-point shots, including one at the buzzer.

"It was pretty good," Kate said at the time. "My team is very proud of me."

"Our motivation was to get out there and play our game," said guard Riley Maynard, "so Kate could get out there and
