WARNING: If you watch this movie you will fall in love with Shailene Woodley. Men will want to date her and women will want to be her. The Descendants is her breakout film, this girl is going to be big. I can’t describe her character; you just have to see it. George Clooney is her white Hawaiian father who is going through a difficult time. His wife is in a coma and he is left to take care of his two daughters who cause trouble.
When Clooney’s character finds out his wife was cheating on him before her accident, the family goes on a trip to confront her lover. This movie teeters on the line of being too sad, but quickly pulls back the tears with awkward humor. The Descendants’ current Rotten Tomatoes rating is 91%. Hands down, this is a must-see from 2011.
I can sum up the Descendants in two words. “It stinks”. And I respect Clooney’s ability. Let me amplify. Funny? Nothing at all unless you find kids swearing incessantly. I was in the theater based on the nearly unanimous hype by the critics. Payola comes to mind immediately. There was one laugh. No, not one scene,not one-line, a single person laughed once although I couldnt figure out why. I concluded someone must have farted. Let me lay this reality out for you to ponder. Your wife is in a coma, possible hours from death, do you take the kids on one, or two airplane trips as Clooney did his brood? Or no trips because you have more important considerations rather than stalking your soon to be late wife’s lover.
