The $79 Dot features a mirror attachment that snaps onto the back of your iPhone and hovers right above its camera lens. You also need Looker, a free software app available through Apple’s iTunes store. The 360-degree images captured by the Dot device are processed by Looker and converted into a standard video that you can view on the phone or transmit to a desktop computer. But with these videos, the swipe of a finger or the slide of a mouse will spin the image for a panoramic view of the scene. Dot has its limitations. The images aren’t as crisp as the usual iPhone video. Besides, no video can be longer than two minutes and 45 seconds. And for best results, you place the iPhone screen-down on a flat surface, instead of holding it in the usual manner. Still, the Dot system is just the thing for shooting video clips at family gatherings, political rallies, or anyplace else where somebody might be sneaking up on you. |
