When English Premier League frontrunners Manchester United and Manchester City crashed out of the 2011-12 Champions League last week, they didn’t exactly get sent home. No, they were sent to Europe’s second-tier competition, the league formerly known as UEFA and currently called Europa.
And while Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, David Silva, Mario Balotelli and especially Alex Ferguson can be forgiven for their lack of enthusiasm over their sudden downgrade into the Europa League, there are plenty of players – and numerous American players – who see the competition as their best opportunity to win silverware and make a lasting impression. As the Europa League’s group stage comes to a close over the next two days, here is a look at eight Americans who may see some action. |
