NEWTON -- Lazy, inarticulate and rude are just a few negative stereotypes older people make about high school athletes. They categorize these young jocks because they believe these juvenile competitors don't have what it takes to contribute to society outside of sports. "The youth really get a bashing," said Mary Emilius, local director of the United Way of Northern New Jersey. "The older we get, the more we bash them." No bashing occurred whatsoever on Sunday at the 2012 Sussex County Scholar Athlete Program banquet at Sussex County Community College, as the top student-athletes from the area's 11 high schools were recognized for their outstanding achievements in scholastics, athletics and community involvement. "This is so inspirational to see these kids who have achieved unbelievable things in every area," Emilius said. "These are the leaders of tomorrow. It's our future for Sussex County and it makes you confident that our future is very bright." |
